SESSION 1 -- 20th Century Jewish History - Part IV (Adults)

Class Description:

20th Century Jewish History – Part IV: This class will deal with Jewish history, predominantly in a chronological fashion, starting in the 1930s. However, there will be side trips into such general issues as assimilation, antisemitism, and immigration, and whatever else strikes my fancy (or yours).

Dave Aron, a physician and researcher, is Professor of Medicine at CWRU School of Medicine.  In addition to the medical school, he teaches at the Weatherhead School of Management.  Dave is an active member of the temple and can be found every Shabbat morning at Torah Study.

SESSION 1 -- Who are We? Dr. Who and Jewish History -- (Adults)

Class Description:

Who are We? Dr. Who and Jewish History: Dr. Who is the longest running show currently in syndication.  Over the years, the Doctor has encountered many difficult situations.  In this class we will explain the premise of the show, view some clips, and discuss how what the Doctor encounters compares to what Jews have encountered throughout history.  Interest in sci-fi is a plus, but not necessary.

David Oppenheimer is the son of Carolyn Oppenheimer and Rabbi Michael Oppenheimer of blessed memory.  He has been a long-standing member of the Suburban Temple Kol-Ami and with his wife Michelle and son Aron have participated in many programs with the Temple.

SESSION 1 -- Our Roots as a Congregation and Where We are Growing -- (Adults)

Class Description:

Our Roots as a Congregation and Where We are Growing: As we get ready to celebrate our 75th anniversary, this class will take a look back at our roots and discuss how our present builds on the work of those who came before us.

Loree Resnik is the Executive Director Emerita of STKA, where she worked for 38 years as both Religious School Principal and Executive Director.  She is also actively involved with NCJW and has served or currently serves on the boards of NATA, ARZA, the Cleveland section of AJC, and the Cleveland chapter of J Street.

SESSION 1 -- Our Family Tree and Yours -- (Kindergarten - 4th Grade)

Class Description:

Our Family Tree and Yours: In this class we will learn about our Jewish ancestors, and what it means to be part of their family tree as well as our own personal family tree. We will examine the lessons and Jewish values all our ancestors passed down to us, and what will we pass on to the next generation?

This class is offered in-person only.

Age: Kindergarten - 4th Grade 

Instructor: Linda Wolfe

Linda Wolfe has been teaching at STKA for over 45 years.  She teaches Hebrew in our learning program and to many of our B’nai Mitzvah students.  She also loves teaching our youngest learners about Torah and values! It is her true passion and joy!

SESSION 1 -- This I Believe --Teens -- (5th-9th Grade)

Class Description:

This I Believe: Both the radio show from the 1950s by the same name and the one that was revived in the early 2000s shared essays, some humorous others serious, on people’s core beliefs. In this class we will read different essays and discuss what others believe while discovering our own core beliefs.

This class is offered in-person only.

Teachers: Deena Nyer Mendlowitz

Age: 5th-9th grade

 

Instructor: Deena Nyer Mendlowitz

Deena Nyer Mendlowitz is a teacher and improviser.  She is also a master of creative expression, which is sure to guide her as she teaches this class.  Deena and her son, Rafi, are active members of STKA and actively involved in Our Tent.  If you need a good laugh, a good pun, or a good way to connect pop culture, especially from the 80s, to Judaism, Deena is your person!

SESSION 1 -- Recipes from the Family Tree -- (Kindergarten - Adults)

Class Description:

Recipes from the Family Tree: In this class we will cook up some of my family favorites along with some Jewish family favorites. You will learn some new recipes, some easy shortcuts, and get to eat a special treat each week!

This class is offered in-person only.

Rabbi Shana Nyer was ordained from Hebrew Union College – Jewish Institute of Religion in 2003 and received her Master of Arts in Religious Education from there in 2016. She loves teaching students of all ages and is passionate about advocating for the inclusion of all learners.  Rabbi Shana is a gifted storyteller who loves to teach Jewish values through this medium, and also gets excited when her lessons combine her knowledge of and passion for Judaism and her interest in all things pop culture.

SESSION 1 -- Torah Tots (0-PreK Learners)

Class Description:

Torah Tots: This program is for our youngest learners. It will be available all morning and will include childcare and age-appropriate fun Jewish learning. 

Please sign up for each session your child will be in Torah Tots. This class is offered in-person only.

Teacher: Liam Jacobs

Age: 0-PreK Learners

Instructor: Liam Jacobs

After four years of working as a toddler teacher at the JCC, Liam returned to school to earn a Bachelor's degree in Psychology at Cleveland State University and will now be in a full-time graduate program at CSU to become a School Psychologist. When he is not studying or babysitting, he likes to stay physically active at the gym and in nature. He is very excited to return as the Torah Tots teacher this year and to connect with the STKA community.

SESSION 2 -- Mindfulness Movement -- (Adults)

Class Description:

Mindfulness Movement: This class will use Yoga with breathwork, meditation, and the Jewish spiritual practice of Mussar as a gateway to mindfulness to transform body and soul.

This class is offered in-person only. THIS CLASS WILL OFFER DIFFERENT LESSONS FROM THE PREVIOUS TRIMESTERS, SO YOU CAN SIGN UP WHETHER YOU’VE PREVIOUSLY ENROLLED OR NOT.

Age: Adults

Instructor: Tessa Gable

Tessa Gable has been a member of STKA since 2019.  She is a registered yoga teacher completing a 200-hour Hatha yoga training in May.  She loves cycling, painting, learning about anything spiritual, and spending time with family.  The spiritual hippy lives in Concord Township with her dog and love, Harley.

SESSION 2 -- This I Believe -- Adult -- (Adults)

Class Description:

In reviving This I Believe, executive producer Dan Gediman said, “The goal is not to persuade Americans to agree on the same beliefs. Rather, the hope is to encourage people to begin the much more difficult task of developing respect for beliefs different from their own.” In this class we will read different essays and discuss what others believe while discovering our own core beliefs

Class Description:

Communities in Science Fiction and Fantasy: A staple of good sci-fi and fantasy is its strong communities of characters. From Star Trek to the Fellowship of the Ring, strength comes from a diverse cast of characters. This trimester we will explore the values and personalities that make those communities special

David Nathenson’s childhood love of outer space led him to a career as a rocket scientist. He is the father of three boys and a dog.  In his spare time, he enjoys creating board games to play with his wife and sons.

SESSION 2 -- Watch Me Grow -- (Kindergarten - 4th Grade)

Class Description:

Watch Me Grow: People are like trees in so many ways. We have roots from those who came before us, we are tended to by those who care for us, and we grow with branches in many directions. In this class we will discover how we can learn from the values we are rooted in and use them to blossom into our best selves.

This class is offered in-person only.

Age: Kindergarten-4th Grade

Teacher: Kathy Klein

Instructor: Kathy Klein

Kathy Klein has a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology and a Masters in Jewish Education. She taught for over 25 years at the Mayfield JCC, Park, & Mandel JCC Early Childhood Centers and was Director of Early Childhood Education at the Shaw Jewish Community Center in Akron. She has been active in Interfaith activities and received two community service awards from then Bishop Pilla. Her research in how young children construct identity was featured at Ingenuityfest. Now retired, she enjoys painting, textile art, and long walks with her husband, Peter, and their four German shepherds.

SESSION 2 -- Chai Five Sports -- (5th-9th Grade)

Class Description:

Chai Five Sports: In this class we will take sports to the next level. Whether we are playing games or learning about great moments from the past and present, we will not only have a good time, but also see where Jewish values and sports connect.

Teacher: Noah "Nappel" Appel

Age: 5th-9th Grade

Instructor: Noah "Nappel" Appel

Noah Appel, or Nappel, as he is known will be finishing his Bachelors degree in Social Work at Cleveland State University, after beginning at Kent State University. He has spent 11 summers at Camp Wise, including this past summer at the Sports Supervisor.  He will bring his love of sports, his love of fun and his love for life to this class!

SESSION 2 -- Confirmation: Judaism and Our Everyday Lives -- (THIS CLASS IS REQUIRED FOR ALL 10TH-12TH GRADERS)

Class Description:

Confirmation: Judaism and Our Everyday Lives: This class will not only help our 10th-12th graders prepare for their Confirmation ceremony in the spring but will also help them learn how to make Judaism a meaningful part of their lives. Through text, pop culture, and yes, food, we will discover all the ways that Judaism permeates our lives.

This class is offered in-person only.

Age: THIS CLASS IS REQUIRED FOR ALL 10TH-12TH GRADERS.

Instructor: Rabbi Vann

Rabbi Vann is beginning her twenty-fourth year in the rabbinate and her twelfth year as STKA’s spiritual leader.  She has always taken an active role in our learning program and loves to teach a wide range of subjects to learners of all ages. 

SESSION 2 -- A Jew Walked into a Temple: Comedy, Judaism and Their Connection -- (Kindergarten-Adults)

Class Description:

A Jew Walked into a Temple: Comedy, Judaism and Their Connection: Come join the fun! Each class will have a guest comedian. We will talk about spirituality and comedy, and then we’ll all do some improv with you.

This class is offered in-person only.
