  • The Torah in Song

    Now that you know how to read Hebrew, learn how to read trope, the different symbols that give you the melody to go with the words in the Torah! Once you know this you can be a Torah reader for life!

 

 

  • Instructor: Cantor Dave Malecki

    Cantor Dave Malecki was ordained from Hebrew Union College – Jewish Institute of Religion in May of 2016 and began as a faculty member at STKA in the fall of 2016.  He became our Director of Music last year and will bring his talents and knowledge to this class, to t’filah (services) and to many other classes.

 

 

 

7th - 9th Grade 

  • Living Well, Dying Well

    From ethical wills to financial planning, from Jewish customs surrounding death and funerals to providing the best end of life care, this class will look at what Judaism has to say about death and how we plan for it in the best possible way.  We will have guest teachers who are experts in financial planning, bioethics, hospice care and funeral planning.

 

  • Instructor: Rabbi Nyer

    Rabbi Shana Nyer was ordained from Hebrew Union College – Jewish Institute of Religion in 2003 and received her Master of Arts in Religious Education from there in 2016. She loves teaching students of all ages and is passionate about advocating for the inclusion of all learners.  Rabbi Shana is a gifted story teller who loves to teach Jewish values through this medium, and also gets excited when her lessons combine her knowledge of and passion for Judaism and her interest in all things pop culture.

    We will watch clips from both the classics and today's hits that are sure to become classics and discover how they relate to Judaism and who we are as Jews!

  • Instructor: Deena Nyer Mendlowitz

    Deena Nyer Mendlowitz is a pre-school teacher and improviser, both of which are sure to guide her as she teaches this class.  Deena and her son, Rafi, are active members of STKA and actively involved in Our Tent.  If you need a good laugh, a good pun, or a good way to connect pop culture, especially from the 80s, to Judaism, Deena is your gal!

  • Torah: Not Just a Bedtime Story Part II

    Through the Book of Genesis, learners will discover what makes our Torah so special, why the people we read about are more than just characters in a book, and why the stories are more sacred that the ones we read before bed.

 

 

  • Instructor: Linda Wolfe

    Linda Wolfe has been teaching at STKA for over 40 years.  She teaches Hebrew in our learning program and to many of our B’nai Mitzvah students.  Linda took a seminar in Philosophical Inquiry, a method of teaching Torah to children that involves going deeper into text and helping them to ask big questions.  She will bring this knowledge, and her love for children and all things Jewish to this class.

 

K - 2nd Grade

  • Israel - Welcome Home!

    Let me welcome you to my home!  Together we will discover Together we will discover Israeli culture places, people, technology, Hebrew, and more!  All that interests you!  I invite you to get to know Israel better!  Welcome home!

 

  • Instructor: Shahak Musai

    Shahak Musai is our ShinShin and is here on a gap year of service between high school and the army. Shahak’s name means “sky”, and she is from a small town in Israel called Kadima where she participated in the scouting program.  In high school she majored in biology and cinema, and she really likes to write, film, edit, and of course watch movies!

 

4th - 6th Grade

  • The Amazing Race-Survivor: Judaism Edition

    Based on the two popular reality shows, learners will work with and compete against each other in age appropriate challenges, trivia and competitions to be the first to figure out the weekly clue. Along the way there will be advantages for those who pay close attention! The class will culminate in a final tribal council where one winner will be chosen by their classmates and win the ultimate STKA prize!

 

  • Instructor: Ori Akrish

    Ori Akrish is both a teacher as well as one of our youth group advisors.  He and his family are active members and he has been a faculty member for about a decade.  He brings creativity and a depth of knowledge to every class he teaches, and he will get you off your feet and moving!  We have loved having his older son, Josh, in the program, and we look forward to officially welcoming his younger son, Liam, to the program this year!

  • Finding My Story In Our Story

    Learners will study the different waves of Jewish immigration to America.  They will also discover their own family’s immigration story and create and beautiful illustration of it using Adobe Creative Suite.

 

 

  • Instructor: Abby Feldenkris

    Abby Feldenkris is one of five siblings who grew up at STKA and in our learning program.  After college she returned home and has been a faculty member for the past three years.  In addition to teaching classes mostly in the arts, using her expertise in graphic design, Abby also works as an aide with one of our students.  We can’t wait to welcome her son, Teddy, and a third generation into our program!

  • Turning Points in Jewish History - Part I From Abraham to the Fall of Israel

    This course deals with six turning points in the first 1000 years of Jewish History. Aspects of each turning point will be discussed including their historical background, how the Jews understood their experience of them, their impact and their legacy.  We will also discuss some of the themes of Jewish history. This course is based on the first six chapters of Turning Points in Jewish History by Marc J. Rosenstein.  Jewish Publication Society, 2018.

    David Aron, a physician and researcher, is Professor of Medicine at CWRU School of Medicine.  In addition to the medical school, he teaches at the Weatherhead School of Management.  Dave is an active member of the temple and can be found every Shabbat morning at Torah Study.

  • "Hear" My Prayer: Learning How to Recite Prayers in Sign Language

    Whether spoken, sung, silent or signed, God hears all our prayers. In this class, learners will discover another way to talk to God – through sign language!

 

  • Instructors: Karen Schiller and Cantor Dave Malecki

    Karen Schiller works as an interpreter for Cleveland Hearing and Speech and brings her knowledge of both American Sign Language and Judaism to this class.  She has been teaching and interpreting for us for the past two years and has become an integral part of our program. You can also often find her and her family at Come Grow With Me Shabbat!

  • You Are a Leader

    Leadership is learned by doing, listening, and being together. With Rabbi Vann and Ori Akrish, this workshop will actively explore how you are already a leader- even if you didn’t know it!

 

  • Instructor: Rabbi Vann and Ori Akrish

    Rabbi Vann is beginning her twentieth year in the rabbinate and her eighth year as STKA’s spiritual leader.  She has always taken an active role in our learning program and loves to teach learners of all ages.  She loves working with our teens at the rabbinic advisor to the youth group, and is excited to help shape our future Jewish leaders.

    Ori Akrish is both a teacher as well as one of our youth group advisors.  He and his family are active members and he has been a faculty member for about a decade.  He brings creativity and a depth of knowledge to every class he teaches, and he will get you off your feet and moving!  We have loved having his older son, Josh in the program, and we look forward to officially welcoming his younger son, Liam, to the program this year!

    Ever since Sarah learned she would have a child at the age of 90, laughter has been central to the Jewish experience. From Sid Cesar to Seinfeld, Mel Brook to The Amazing Mrs. Maisel, Jews have found humor in a variety of places. Sometimes we make the jokes, and sometimes they are turned back on us. Spiels, cinema, folk tales, sitcoms and cartoons offer plenty of material for this class on comedy and culture.

    Alan Hazzard has been teaching at ST-KA for 13 years and recently joined the Board of Trustees. Professionally he works at Westfield Insurance (with Board President Matt Lehman) managing the company's real estate and facilities.

    There are beautiful places, amazing people and lots of cool things Israelis have invented, and we will discover them all and lots more in this class!

 

  • Instructor: Susan Merdler

    Susan Merdler raised her daughter at STKA along with her husband, Lyle, and has been an active member and dedicated faculty member.  Susan is currently on the Board and president of Kol Nashim.  She has taught many ages and stages in our learning program, and this year will be combining her love of cooking with her love of Judaism.

 

Kindergarten - 3rd Grade

  • From Eve to the Notorious RBG: Women who Shape Judaism

    In this class we will learn about what woman's role was in creating the Bible and Judaism as we know it. We'll also learn what it means to be a powerful Jewish woman in 2018, by studying some of the greatest women out there, who just so happen to be Jewish!

 

  • Instructor: Bri Adamson

    Bri Adamson was a learner and madricha in our program before going off to college.  Since returning she has been an aide for a student and a faculty member.  Bri received her master’s in social work this past May and will bring that knowledge, her love of children, and her love of Judaism to this class.

 

4th - 7th Grade

  • From Scroll to Stage

    Learners will pick a favorite story from the Torah and create a play from script to sets to costumes.  And the whole community will have an opportunity to see their production in January!

  • Instructor: Meghann Hennen

    Meghann was born and raised in Beachwood, Ohio. She is an artist, early childhood educator, and ballet teacher to young children. In 2006 she received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting and Drawing from The University of Akron. In 2008 she graduated with my Master of Fine Arts from Parsons The New School of Design studying Painting and Performance Art. Then in 2015 she graduated from Columbia University, Teachers College with her second Master’s degree in Early Childhood Education and Special Education. She has performed and exhibited her work in the United States and in Europe. She and her husband live in Shaker Heights and love spending time with their cats!
