SESSION 1 - 20th Century Jewish History - Part XII (Adults)

Class Description:

20th Century Jewish History – Part XII: This class will deal with American Jewish history, predominantly in a chronological fashion, starting in the 1940s. We will discuss such general issues as assimilation, antisemitism, and immigration, and whatever else strikes my fancy (or yours).

Instructor: Dave Aron

David Aron, a physician and researcher, is Professor of Medicine at CWRU School of Medicine.  In addition to the medical school, he teaches at the Weatherhead School of Management.  Dave is an active member of the temple and can be found every Shabbat morning at Torah Study.

SESSION 1 - Solomon's Temple to STKA: 3,000 Years of Synagogue Architecture (9th Grade-Adults)

Class Description:

From Solomon's Temple to STKA: 3,000 Years of Synagogue Architecture: Synagogues, more than just places to pray, they are the center of our Jewish communities. In this course, we will explore examples of synagogues, shuls, and temples from 3,000 years of our history. We will be elevating the stories of how these structures were built and highlighting the features that made them unique. We will be starting with temples and synagogues of the ancient world, proceeding to diaspora synagogues in Eastern Europe and Spain, and finishing up with modern synagogues in the U.S. including our very own Suburban Temple.

Instructor: David Nathenson

David Nathenson’s childhood love of outer space led him to a career as a rocket scientist. He is the father of three boys and a dog. In his spare time, he enjoys creating board games to play with his wife and sons.

SESSION 1 - Humor, Hope and Hard Work: A Timeline of Jewish Non-Binary and Female Comedians (9th Grade-Adults)

Class Description:

Humor, Hope, and Hard Work: A Timeline of Jewish Non-Binary and Female Comedians: From Joan Rivers to Bea Arthur to Gilda Radner to Ilana Glazer and many more, we'll dive deep into at least a minyan's worth of Jewish comedians. From their unique comedy voices to the way Jewishness had impacted their art, we'll watch key performances and discuss it all while laughing our tuchuses off.

Instructor: Deena Nyer Mendlowitz

Deena Nyer Mendlowitz is a teacher and improviser.  She and her son, Rafi, are active members of STKA, and she is actively involved in Our Tent. If you need a good laugh, a good pun, or a good way to connect pop culture, especially from the 80s, to Judaism, Deena is your person!

 

SESSION 1 - Tikvah: Putting our Jewish Values into Action Part II (Kindergarten - 4th Grade)

Class Description:

Tikvah: Putting our Jewish Values into Action Part II: Rabbi Jonathan Sacks teaches “Optimism is the belief that the world is changing for the better; hope is the belief that, together, we can make the world better.” In this class we will learn how we can use our Jewish values and do our part to make our world the place we hope and know it can be.

Instructor: Linda Wolfe

Linda Wolfe has dedicated over 50 years of her life to teaching at STKA.  She teaches Hebrew in our learning program and to many of our B’nai Mitzvah students. She also loves teaching our youngest learners about Torah and values! It is her true passion and joy!

SESSION 1 -  A Nappel A Day: Finding Hope in the Hard Days (5th-12th Grade)

Class Description:

A Nappel A Day: Finding Hope in the Hard Days: In challenging times, it can feel like hope is out of reach — but Jewish tradition reminds us that even in the darkest moments, light can be found. If you have met me, you probably know that I tend to look through life through a positive lens. This class is a journey into discovering resilience, joy, and meaning through the lens of Jewish texts, poetry, meditation, and even pop culture. Together, we’ll explore ancient teachings and modern inspirations, finding unexpected sparks of hope in familiar prayers, Psalms, contemporary music, film, and everyday life. Through reflective practices and open-hearted conversation, we’ll learn tools to cultivate inner light and share it with others. Whether you’re feeling overwhelmed or simply seeking spiritual grounding, this class offers a space to reconnect with your sense of purpose, presence, and hope.

Instructors: Noah (Nappel) Appel

Noah Appel, or Nappel as he is known, is finishing his bachelor’s degree in social work at Cleveland State University, after beginning at Kent State University. He has spent 14 summers at Camp Wise, including this past summer as the  Jewish Life Supervisor. He will bring his knowledge of Jewish values, his leadership experience, and his love for life to any class he teaches!

 

SESSION 1 - They Tried to Destroy Us, We Survived, Let's Eat!: Cooking for the Jewish Holidays (Kindergarten-Adults)

Class Description:

They Tried to Destroy Us, We Survived, Let’s Eat!: Cooking for the Jewish Holidays: From Rosh Hashanah to Shavuot, we not only attach special meaning and values to each Jewish holiday, but also special foods! In this class we will cook and taste our way through the Jewish year.

This class is offered in-person only. 

Instructor: Rabbi Shana Nyer

Rabbi Shana Nyer was ordained from Hebrew Union College – Jewish Institute of Religion in 2003 and received her Master of Arts in Religious Education from there in 2016. She loves teaching students of all ages and is passionate about advocating for the inclusion of all learners. Rabbi Shana is a gifted storyteller who loves to teach Jewish values through this medium, and also gets excited when her lessons combine her knowledge of and passion for Judaism and her interest in all things pop culture or her love of cooking.

SESSION 1 - Torah Tots (0-PreK Learners)

Class Description:

Torah Tots: This program is for our youngest learners. It will be available all morning and will include childcare and age-appropriate fun Jewish learning. 

Please sign up for each session your child will be in Torah Tots. This class is offered in-person only.

Instructor: Liam Jacobs

Liam has eight years of experience in early childhood education and has been the Torah Tots teacher for Our Tent for five years. This year, he is beginning his graduate studies in Counseling and Art Therapy at Ursuline College to further support children’s growth and creativity. At Our Tent, he enjoys facilitating art activities that introduce his students to Jewish holidays, traditions, and values, nurturing their interest and connection to Judaism. When not working or studying, he enjoys spending time with his dog, a Yorkie-poo named Sheila. Liam is very excited to return as the Torah Tots teacher this year and to connect with the STKA community.

 

SESSION 2 - Soaking Up Even More Words of Torah (8th Grade-Adults)

Class Description:

Soaking Up Even More Words of Torah:  The last three words of the blessing for studying Torah are “l’asok b’dvrei Torah,” which can be translated as “to soak up the words of Torah." So, let’s dive into the deep end past the surface meanings and seek out the interpretations to be discovered below the depths. No prior study of Torah is expected or needed to enjoy this class. All that's needed is an open mind and an open heart.

Instructor: Rabbi Ben Sternman

Rabbi Ben recently retired from being the rabbi of Adat Chaverim in Plano, Texas and moved back to Cleveland, his adopted hometown. He is grateful to continue to teach, a passion of his.

SESSION 2 - Strangers in a Strange Land: Finding Hope in the Literature of the Spanish Conversos (Adults)

Class Description:

Strangers in a Strange Land: Finding Hope in the Literature of the Spanish Conversos: In 1492, the Jews of Spain were forced to either convert to Christianity or be expelled from the Iberian Peninsula to find a new homeland. For those who chose to leave,  these New Jews needed to reconstruct their lives and identities in the various communities that would accept them, among those being Portugal, Italy and Flanders (the modern day Netherlands). This course will study poetry, plays, novels and biblical commentaries produced by Conversos living in these communities and examine how these works created liminal spaces where Judaism and Christianity could dialogue and confront each other leading to a form of reconciliation. To this end, we will study works in English translation by such writers as Antonio Enriquez Gomez, Daniel Levi de Barrios and Joao Pinto Delgado

Instructor: James Nemiroff

James Nemiroff is the Coordinator of the Sabo Center for Languages and Cultures and a Spanish Instructor at John Carroll University.  His research interests focus on the representation of Judaism in Spanish literature and culture and as such has taught extensively in this area over the years at various higher education institutions. In all of his classes, he tries to promote animo or the ability to learn in a brave and collaborative space and looks forward to joining the team of distinguished faculty and learners at the temple. 

SESSION 2 - Tikkun Olam: Judaism and Social Justice (9th Grade-Adults)

Class Description:

Tikkun Olam: Judaism and Social Justice: Judaism has always had an emphasis on social justice.  This class will explore what is a Jewish issue, and  how Judaism has approached social justice in the Hebrew bible, Talmud and early rabbinical writings.  We will then explore how Jews and Judaism in the United States have contributed  to social justice in the United States in such areas as the civil rights, labor, and feminist movements.  We will conclude with examining Jewish groups across the country who are working for social justice today.

Instructors: Larry Bresler

Larry Bresler is a social worker who has been addressing issues of poverty for over 50 years. They have ranged from being the director of an interfaith agency  providing human services and advocacy to those who are poor, to directing a national organization addressing issues of poverty, to organizing the  March to End Poverty at the 2016 Republican Convention. He also created and taught courses on child poverty and poverty strategies for social workers at Case Western Reserve University.

 

SESSION 2 - Hope and HeART (Kindergarten - 4th Grade)

Class Description:

Hope and HeART: In this class we will use play, imagination, and art to explore Jewish stories and their meaningful life lessons. Be ready for an active hour of fun and creation. Let's play!

Instructor: Annika Balish & Deena Nyer Mendlowitz

Annika Balish is STKA's Music Director. She graduated from The College of Wooster with a degree in voice in 2022, and spent the summers of 2022, 2023 and 2025 at Camp Wise as the performing arts supervisor. She found her love of music at her own synagogue growing up, and loves to help instill that love in many others

SESSION 2 - Lego My Temple!  (5th-12th Grade)

Class Description:

Lego My Temple!: The original Temple was the center of the ancient Jewish community.  In this class we will not only learn about the role it had in the daily lives of Jews at the time, but we will also learn all about how it was built, and we will build our very only model out of Lego bricks to be displayed in the learning wing.

Instructor: Yossi Berkowitz

Yossi Berkowitz graduated from The Ohio State University with degrees in economics and political science. He has worked at Camp Wise, where he supervised both the oldest and youngest campers, and he loves discussing and teaching Jewish history. He’s excited to bring his experience to STKA for what he hopes will be the first of many classes!

SESSION 2 - KavaNature: Finding Joy in our Surroundings Part II (Kindergarten-Adults)

Class Description:

KavaNature: Finding Joy in our Surroundings Part II: In KavaNature, this trimester we will be exploring the connection between the natural world and Judaism. As fall progresses and winter rolls in, we will be exploring the changing of the seasons, the change from light to dark, our spiritual relationship with the Earth, and these themes’ role in the many Jewish and secular holidays at this time of year. Weather permitting, we will continue to meet outside!

Instructors: Josh Levy

Josh Levy is a licensed social worker and longtime staff member and song leader at Camp Wise. Josh is excited to combine his passions for mental health and wellness, Judaism, and nature into this class!
