T’KIAH!
Introduction
Hearing the shofar is an important part of the High Holy Days and, for many of us, something we wish we could do. But most of us don’t have a shofar laying around and, even if we did, the ready-for-prime-time skill to blow it. Now you don’t need either. We want you to make a video blowing the shofar – or a video of a kazoo, trumpet etc. If you don't have a shofar, there are a limited number of plastic shofarot at the front door of temple. They are available first-come, first served. No experience necessary – just a desire to share.
Instructions
Here’s how to participate by making your own video of the shofar calls:
1. LISTEN to David demonstrate the four different calls on the video – T’KIAH, SH’VARIM, T’RUAH, and T’KIYAH G’DOLAH.
2. Practice each call a few times by itself.
3. Practice SH’VARIM – T’RUAH, which is the Sh’varim call followed immediately by the T’ruah call.
4. Have someone record you playing each of the calls (SEE BELOW). Keep in mind while you make the video:
- The video should capture you from at least the waist up (full body is fine!) and should include the ENTIRE shofar (or whatever instrument you’re using).
- Do it outside during daylight hours, or with good lighting indoors.
- If you can, do the filming in profile so that the shofar and your hands don’t cover up your entire face. 😊
- Leave a few seconds between the different calls.
SHOFAR CALLS TO RECORD:
1. T’KIAH!
2. SH’VARIM!
3. T’RUAH!
4. SH’VARIM-T’RUAH! (don’t pause in between)
5. T’KIAH G’DOLAH!
If your recording doesn’t go as planned, you can try it again. Just remember, it doesn’t have to be perfect! Have fun with it!
Please put your video in this Dropbox location so that Deb can retrieve it, NO LATER THAN FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 4th!
